The Powell, Birchington

What are you supposed to do those days in between boxing day and New Year’s Eve apart from eating?

On the Sunday after Christmas day, I was still desperately wanting our Christmas day dinner again. I think it is safe to say this was the best Christmas Day dinner I have ever had. Cooked again by Adams mum with a little help from the siblings. I couldn’t stop craving the gravy and potatoes.

Naturally, Adam didn’t fancy cooking so we got straight on the phone to one of our favourite places for a Sunday roast, and booked a table for the four of us.

The place was full of Christmas still, which was lovely.

The Powell is located in a historic area of Birchington and is a pub as well as a restaurant, but the restaurant area is separated which I personally love the layout of this one.

It also has 6 unique rooms which were opened in 2018. Perfect for a place to stay by the sea.

We arrived a little earlier than we booked, but we were taken straight to our table.

We were sat in the conservatory part of the restaurant where we watched the sky turn from blue to all the shades of purple at sunset.

We played with some of Pollyanna’s Christmas presents while we waited for our food to arrive; puzzle and magic water colouring books.

We watched eagerly on for our food to arrive

I saved myself for mains but Adam dove straight into the starter;

Honey & Thyme Baked Camembert with toasted homemade focaccia and Powell’s chutney

It was cheese-licious and I couldn’t help but dip in

For mains we both went for the Sunday roast, the options were chicken, pork collar or topside beef.

All served with a chipolata

Homemade stuffing

Cauliflower cheese

Seasonal vegetables, honey roasted parsnips

A homemade Yorkshire pudding (I always ask for a few more)

And peas, I couldn’t have a roast without peas. They were kind enough to give us a large serving which Pollyanna dived straight into.

The dinners swim on gravy, and you’re given a nice extra jug of gravy too, I hate having to ask for me. The servings were spot on.

None of us had any room for dessert.

By the time we left, it was dark and cold, but it’s safe to say The Powell is still one of my favourite places for a roast dinner in Thanet.
